Howard Dean, Dem party and '06

Here's a good article about what Howard Dean should do in order to prepare the party for the 2006 midterms.

Who annointed Joe "MBNA" Biden party spokeshole?
Sen. Joe Biden announced that Dean would have absolutely no "policy role." Dean has told reporters "most of the policy pronouncements" will come from Democratic leaders in Congress.
Has anybody heard any "policy pronouncements" lately?

Dean tries to put lipstick on a pig.

Despite Dean's assertions, the Democratic Party doesn't just need a better message. It needs a new platform. Instead of waiting until '08 to rewrite it, party leaders must start now.

Is it possible that the Kerry campaign was flawed? Does anybody have a clue what Kerry "stood for" besides indecision and weak delivery?

he 2004 Democratic Platform is no exception. It is vague and meek. (It was drafted by appointees selected by the Kerry campaign and former party chairman Terry McAuliffe.) In fact, the platform embodies several failures of the Democrats' approach in 2004, including indecision, mixed messages and weak delivery.

I'm not so sure about this next part.

There is little doubt that when the next elections roll around, Dean will have raised enough money and Democrats will have fulfilled their role as the opposition party. But if they don't work together now to outline a specific and unified Democratic agenda, they may remain the opposition party for a long time.
I've got a whole lot of doubt about whether Reid and Pelosi have the slightest idea what being the opposition party even means. Are they going to start opposing Bush before or after the end of this session of Congress?

If they don't start soon, Cheney will be the next President of the United States. He'll ask Joe Lieberman to be his V.P. and campaign on all of the bi-partisan Bush legislation that the DLC helped Bush pass.

Re: Speaking truth to boneheads (3.00 / 0)

Joe Biden is someone the Democrats should keep off the TV.  What a ham!  He's insufferable.

Nancy Pelosi is a poor TV presence.

The Democrats badly need to clean house of their TV stable and push forward some new people.  Otherwise, they get the egomaniacs like Biden and Harold Ford, Jr.

Where is Dean? (none / 0)

Apparently, Dean is gagged.   Meanwhile, they vote to keep Shiavo alive while they vote for a budget that denies medical care to millions.  I think the Ds are hopeless and Howard is wasting his time.

What's The Measurement For '06 Success? (none / 0)

I think everyone can agree that Democrats ought to make gains in 2006, given the historical trend towards the "out party" in off-year elections 6 years into a Presidency, coupled with the Administration's problems on a number of issues. But should heads role if they don't make gains comparable to 1958, 1966, 1974 or 1986? Remember that happened to Republicans in 1998 (probably due to mishandling impeachment).

Ah... but did you see how they are "planning" a faux military pull out of Iraq in... you guessed it ....2006

Abuziad just said that the only problems now left in Iraq are political not security....go figure

Besides telling us how to live, think, marry, pray, vote, invest, educate our children and, die, the GOP has done a fine job of getting gov't out of our lives.

Where's Howie? (3.00 / 0)

I don't think that he has given any interviews since becoming DNC Chair.  We need to have a single leader who can take the message to America for 2006.  I think that Howard Dean is that man.  The 2006 race must be nationalized if we hope to win.  This is our shot to take back the Government.  If we can have a Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid in two years, we can finally investigate all the things that have been going on for the past 4 years, uncovering the lies and corruption, leading us to a big Democratic win in 2008 (I hope with a President Feingold).  Let's get Dean out there in the national media.  He must go on CNN, Meet the Press, This Week, Face the Nation, and yes, even Fox News.

Re: Where's Howie? (none / 0)

Why should he give them a ratings?

These are horrible right wing controlled media and we need to find an alternate means of getting our message across.

No matter what he says they will twist his words... if you watched 10 minutes of so-called news this past week you would realize the an unbiased media no longer exist in any form what so ever. Only when is was certain that the wingnuts were bound to lose then the media "tried" to be a tiny bit impartial.

Take the DLC Challenge (none / 0)

Name one, single, solitary, positive accomplishment of the entire Democratic party this session. Blocking Social Security doesn't count. If it wasn't for the grass/netroots, the DLC would have already sold out Social Security.

Press appearances don't matter to me. (none / 0)

I don't care if Howard is on TV.

I care about what he is doing to organize the grass roots.

And I care if the Dems are learning some discipline as a party.

Dean might be working on these things.

Or, he might not.

I'd like some insider knowledge on what he IS DOING!

The American Compact (3.00 / 1)

We tend to speak only in generalities, and define better what we are against than what we are for. This has been a problem Democrats and Progressives have had for several decades. The Republicans and right-wingers have been able to define us because we have not defined ourselves, as Jefferson once said, "in words so plain and clear as to command their assent."

It is to this end that I propose The American Compact.

The American Compact is a set of ten "action items" a Democratic Congress can take, and therefore can serve as the backbone for nationalizing the 2006 Congressional races. Several of them have state and local aspects, so state and local candidates can run "on the Compact" as well.

The final version of the compact, of course, will have to be put together by elected Democrats and our friends at the DNC, and some wordsmithing probably remains, but I propose:

  • Free public education pre-K through post-12, reflecting that a high school diploma alone is no longer the "ticket" to the middle class
  • National standards for fair federal elections including a common ballot design and common 24 hour election day (10pm EST the first Monday in November to 10pm EST the first Tuesday in November, worldwide)
  • Nonpartisan congressional redistricting (and at the state level, nonpartisan legislative redistricting)
  • Fair and Simple progressive no-deductions income and payroll tax
  • Fair Social Security funding (lift the income limit, add progressivity) to guarantee solvency and meet our moral obligation
  • Health care for every child as a step to health care for every American
  • Expanding, retraining and reequipping the National Guard as our "first line of defense" for Homeland Security. Return "the militia" to its role of protecting its community.
  • "Troops not Toys" - Spend tax dollars on the military prioritized to support the soldiers, sailors and airmen, not enrich the defense contractors
  • Pass legislation to enforce equal protection under the laws for all Americans as guaranteed by the Constitution
  • Progress toward energy independence by applying American technology for common-sense conservation and the use of government grants and incentives to encourage purchase and installation of home and community based sources of solar, wind and other inexhaustible, renewable energy.

We need to be more than against the "other guys". We need to provide a clear set of actions we will take if elected, actions that Americans can look at and easily say, "Yes, I support that." That is my goal with The America Compact.
